Cross Creek
I hadn't done much hiking in Holy Cross Wilderness. Eagles Nest (click here) is right out my back door so I had done nearly all of my day hiking there. This summer I planned on exploring some of the Holy Cross area, a little further from home. Cross Creek Trail begins at about 8500 feet, a mile up the Tigiwon road just south of Minturn. On June 2 we drove to the Tigiwon road and found it still closed until summer so we hiked up the road to reach the trail. The trail climbs gradually to the southwest and soon meets and crosses Cross Creek. This is the creek, swollen to its maximum with snow melt, at just over 8600 feet. A slip and fall into the water here would be deadly. You'd be carried swiftly downstream over boulders and logs...and well, enough about that.
