This is Independence Monument, perhaps the most photographed of all the rock formations in the Colorado National Monument. There are many ways to visit the park. Most people enter the park in a motor vehicle and view all the scenery from the road above. This day I entered the park on foot via the Monument Canyon Trail which begins at the outskirts of the Town of Fruita. It is an easy hike and enables one to see all the good stuff from below; something many people never get to see. (Note that the first photo in this gallery is also of Independence Monument from above, at another time.)
