After about 6.5 miles and 1700 feet of elevation gain, Upper Piney River Trail reaches Upper Piney Lake. There is no trail to speak of for the last quarter mile before the lake. Just follow the river. It took me 5.5 hours to reach the lake but I'm a slow hiker and I stop for lots of pictures. I expect it could be done in four or less, with fewer stops.
