The valley is situated between Mount Lincoln and North Star Mountain. As it curves to the southwest the valley comes to an abrupt end at the base of Mount Democrat. This is the first view of Democrat (upper left) about an hour up the trail. A bit further, where the valley turns and climbs toward Democrat, the trail turns north and climbs steeply toward Wheeler Lake.
