In the small clearing 1500 feet below, is a small cabin which was home to Martin & Janie Caudill and their 14 children, just up the creek from a small town called Basin Cove which was wiped out by mudslides in 1916. There was no Blue Ridge Parkway then, no roads to speak of and certainly no tourists looking down on their cabin.
