Photo of The Week
The heavy frost shown here on an aspen branch lit by the flash of the camera is also known as surface hoar. The crystals form when humid air condenses and freezes on surfaces in very cold conditions. Collecting on the snow surface, then buried by the next snowfall, surface hoar creates a fragile layer which contributes to avalanches.
