Photo of The Week
This shot of 12,965 foot Mount Sopris was taken in the Roaring Fork Valley along the Rio Grande Trail. A Rails to Trails project, this multi-use trail follows what was once the path of the Aspen Branch of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. Train operations here ceased by the mid 1990s. The corridor was purchased and converted in phases to a recreational trail between Glenwood Springs and Aspen, Colorado. There are shuttle busses which run the length of the trail on adjacent Highway 82. You can bike, roller-blade, run or walk any section of the trail and catch a bus if you like, back to where you started. I recently bicycled out of Glenwood Springs and turned around east of Carbondale where a five mile section of the trail is closed December through April for wildlife protection. As you can see, the foliage isn't very green in April, but it's a great ride.
