Beaver Creek Resort was conceived in the late 1960s and early 70s when the possibility of hosting the 1976 Winter Olympics in Colorado was being considered. Colorado voters decided against hosting the Olympics but Vail Associates, owner/operator of nearby Vail Mountain, proceeded with plans to develop the area. The ski area opened in the winter of 1980-81 and since then Beaver Creek has become a huge year-round resort.
