Until year 2000, the railroad was the only way to get to Whittier by land. The train goes through a three mile tunnel which has been upgraded to allow one-way automobile traffic. Trains and autos alternate through the tunnel providing access that was never quite so easy. This picture was taken from the front of the train approaching Portage Glacier and the tunnel to Whittier.
