The shipping lane through Valdez Narrows doesn't allow enough room for large ships to pass safely in opposite directions. In July, 2001, tugboats tethered to the Chevron Mississippi prevented a collision with a fishing boat here in the Narrows. Fishing with nets in the narrows is a natural, as Salmon are pinched into the narrow channel. The tugboat rescue provides evidence that measures (such as tethering tugboats to the giant ships) to prevent oil spills can work.
