Our mission this weekend was to climb three fourteeners; i.e. mountains which tower above 14,000 feet. There are 54 of them in Colorado. In close proximity to each other are Mount Antero, Mount Shavano and Tabeguache Mountain, so their summits were our goal. We drove into the area south of Buena Vista, Colorado in my friend Ron's four-wheel-drive Explorer. The plan was to tackle the easiest of the three mountains on the first afternoon. The narrow road leads to about the 13,500 foot level of Mt. Antero at which point we began the hike to the summit. Here we are at about the 14,000 foot level, approaching the 14,269 foot summit. Note the little patch of snow at the top; you'll be able to spot it from a distance in later photos in this gallery. |
