Approaching Pitkin Lake this early in the year the trail is hard to follow. The hiking is mostly on snow, or working your way around it on the rocks. Occasionally you'll find stretches of the trail in sunny areas. The lake would be hard to miss, since the Pitkin Creek drainage is bordered on both sides by high peaks and leads you right to it.
