The Mount Elbert Trail begins near Twin Lakes, Colorado, south of Leadville, and ascends quickly through dense forest. There's a 4000 foot elevation gain from the trailhead at the end of a four wheel drive road to the Mount Elbert summit. In about 40 minutes you reach this first view of the Arkansas River Valley, looking northeast.
