14,036 foot Mt. Sherman is among the most easily climbed, of 54 mountains in Colorado which exceed 14,000 feet in height. There are two easy routes; from the east, near Leavick, outside of Fairplay; and from the west, in Iowa Gulch outside of Leadville. Easy is a relative term here. Sherman is a high mountain demanding respect and preparation. It requires more than 2000 vertical feet of climbing over rough trail and rock to reach the summit. As the panorama loads you're looking roughly south at Horseshoe Mountain in the center. Seen in the distance, southwest to northwest are several Sawatch Range fourteeners including; 14,336 foot La Plata Peak; 14,433 foot Mt. Elbert; 14,421 foot Mt. Massive; and 14,005 foot Mount of the Holy Cross. A few hundred yards north, people can be seen standing at the summit of Mt. Sherman. (Follow the line of snow and zoom in if you can't see them.) Southeast is Pikes Peak, in the haze about 60 miles away. Click here for the photo gallery from Mount Sherman. |
