This side canyon is known as Separation Canyon. Here on August 28, 1869, after months on the river with the John Wesley Powell expedition, with failing boats, few rations, little strength and facing another treacherous set of rapids, the Howland brothers and Bill Dunn decided to separate from the rest of the party to climb out of the canyon. Legend has it, on the plateau above, they met their fate at the hands of Shivwits Indians. Two days later, the six remaining river explorers reached safety and the expedition ended. |
