This photo of upper Gore Creek valley in Eagles Nest Wilderness shows evidence of the mountain pine beetle epidemic that's sweeping across Colorado. The US Forest Service estimates that 90% of all lodgepole pine in the state will be destroyed by the insects. Typically I avoid showing the destruction in my weekly photos but it's getting harder to avoid it. When the trees die, they turn a rusty brown color. When the brown needles fall off, the trees look gray. The dead trees increase the potential for forest fires and eventually they fall.
