This view of the Black Mountain Range was taken from Mount Mitchell. At 6684 feet, Mount Mitchell is the highest point in the U.S. east of the Mississippi River. There is a parking area near the summit in Mount Mitchell State Park along the Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina. A moderate walk of 840 feet gets you to an observation desk which rises above the trees at the summit.
