Taken from Lava Point on the Upper Kolob Plateau, this photo shows smoke from the Horse Fire at Zion National Park. Started by lightning on July 7, the fire continued to burn in late July forcing a partial closure of the West Rim Trail. The smoke-filled valley left of center is Goose Creek which drains into the Narrows of Zion Canyon, shown in last week's photo. The fire was being managed as a resource benefit fire and allowed to burn, reducing fuels and risks from future wildfires.
