Winter Park Ski Area opened in 1940. It was one of the first ski areas in the United States. Until the Moffat Railroad Tunnel conquered the Continental Divide, there was no town and few people in this part of Colorado. Then for more than 60 years the Ski Train provided easy access to Winter Park for skiers from Denver. Train service ended in spring of 2009. The ski area rises from 9000 feet to over 12,000 feet.
