Update: The Park Service has carved steps to improve safety at the dangerous point I encountered in 2004 and the safety cable has been removed. (See below.) Exposure has been greatly reduced and it's a big improvement to the trail. However, considerable scrambling is necessary to negotiate this section of Syncline Trail. I would not recommend it if you're uncomfortable climbing over large boulders using hands and feet as necessary, or if you fear heights.

Previous post from 2004: There's a point along the trail where I had difficulty. A ledge must be negotiated where the park service has placed a cable to hold for safety while you work your way around a tight spot. This is not for those with a fear of heights! I nearly had to turn back.
