Flat Tops Wilderness, Colorado

The Chinese Wall is a west facing row of cliffs near Trappers Lake in Flat Tops Wilderness. Chinese Wall Trail begins at a trailhead on Rio Blanco County Road 8 near Ripple Creek Pass and stretches through 18 miles of Flat Tops Wilderness to end at Island Lakes Trail. Because Chinese Wall Trail intersects with several other trails along its length, hikers may do just a section, as we did.

Approaching from the east via Devils Causeway, we hiked about two miles of Chinese Wall Trail and connected with Bear River Trail to descend to Stillwater Reservoir where we began. That makes a nice loop hike of almost 11 miles but requires crossing the narrow and treacherous Causeway.
